How to Find Us

Accommodation and Local Area

"Birch Cottage a wonderful getaway".. April 2016
This was our second holiday at Birch Cottage at the Easter holidays. The cottage was as good as it was the first time we visited. It is modern, bright and full of character so comfortable it is hard to leave..

"Perfection, we couldn't wait to come back".. October 2015
It is not always advisable to revisit holidays in case they do not do justice to your memories. As we were visiting Edzell there was no doubt in our minds where we wanted to stay - Birch Cottage. It certainly lived up to our memories! From the moment we arrived a warm welcome awaited us. Clean and comfortable absolutely faultless , even the weather was kind to us, can't wait until our next visit.

“Truly home from home".. June 2015 stayed at Birch Cottage for 4 weeks with my sons. Wonderful and we don't want to leave. Immaculate, modern and charming, everything you need. Made to feel so welcome. Would definitely return!

Birch Cottage has an ideal location, just a short walk to a range of local amenities (coffee shops, gift shops, hotels, local convenience store, award-winning butcher, post office, hairdresser, and chemist). There is ample car parking space. There are a collection of books which should suit all tastes, from losing yourself in a novel for a week, to dipping into over a glass of wine! A range of family board-games are also available to keep everyone entertained.  The open plan living, dining and kitchen area is spacious and bright, boasting two large skylight velux windows and one large sliding door which leads out to the sheltered, private courtyard with a decked seating area with tables and chairs.

This a beautiful rural location and the area is well known for hillwalking (with 3 local Munros; Mount Keen, Driesh and Mayar) golfing, walking, cycling, fishing and shooting. This property is ideally located, just 25 metres from the second tee at Edzell Golf Club. The Golf Club is in walking distance (less than 5 minutes!), and if you don't feel like 18 holes, there is a 9 hole Golf Course and Driving range a 5 minute walk from the property.

Alternatively, there are 2 particularly beautiful river/woodland walks just 10 minutes from the cottage - The Rocks of Solitude (Blue Door Walk) and the Shakin' Brig. The Blue Door walk is stunning - a network of paths and trails take you on a dramatic woodland walk looking down into the North Esk River as it plunges into some spectacular gorges and rapids - popular with kayakers, if you're brave enough!  Don't forget your mountain bikes too..  perfect for beginners and the more adventurous!

If you want to explore further afield there are the Brown & White Caterthuns, 2 massive iron age hill-forts or Pirners Brig, a perfect location for a picnic overlooking the West Water. Edzell Castle is a short 20 minute walk away from the property, (please check opening times). Edzell is a perfect base to explore the North East of Scotland - Aberdeen, Dundee,  Fife or even Perthshire, are all less than 60 mins drive away. The stunning beaches at St. Cyrus and Lunan Bay are approximately 20 minutes drive and make an ideal family day out at the seaside.

However, if you just want to sit and relax with a book in front of the wood burning stove, then this cottage offers you the comfort and peace to do just that!
